Suffolk Show 2013
It was with a certain trepidation that I looked forward to this year’s big event – the Suffolk Show 2013. The last one was abandoned due to high winds!
Mother Nature was in a mildly better mood this year – but only just. Day one of the Suffolk Show saw rain and low cloud and day 2, although drier, still managed a gloomy grey sky.
Undeterred, the good people of Suffolk – and beyond – braved the elements. 90,000 of them streamed through the gates to take in the delights of the county’s highlight event.
Here is a flavour of this year’s Suffolk Show…
From the official Suffolk Show website:
Exhilarating displays
The Suffolk Show Ipswich Building Society Grand Ring has three exhilarating new displays.
Alongside top international show jumping there is the Shetland Pony Grand National. Cheer on the ponies and riders in this qualifying competition over the hurdles. There’s new horsepower of a different kind. The amazing Broke FMX stunt bikes roar into the ring to perform a series of breathtaking air borne feats.
The military bring a new display. Teams of engineers from the 23rd Regiment at Rock Barracks will compete in a grueling time challenge to construct a battlefield bridge, capable of taking a 70 tonne tank.
This is to demonstrate how they cross key points in a battlefield situation in Iraq and Afghanistan. This is one area where women are actively involved on the front line.
Healthy Family Trail
Healthy Ambitions Suffolk has created a new Family Health Trail at the Suffolk Show. Pick up your route map and follow the trail to eight different points to participate and collect sheep stamps.
Hand in the completed map at Farminanglia and ewe could win a prize! See the new flock of sheep display made by schoolchildren from across the county, the fashion show by Suffolk New College students.
Get cooking, see the butchery demonstration and discover the importance of sheep in everyday living.
House and Garden Village
Situated next to the Flower and Garden Experience. This new feature is packed with ideas, services and products. Equipment for merging your house and garden to create the ultimate living indoor/outdoor space – deck Jacuzzis, conservatory ideas etc
Time to Celebrate
If you’ve a special event to celebrate – a birthday, wedding or anniversary. The Event Zone has everything to make it that extra special, including the Glasswells ice skating rink.
Made in Suffolk
Showcasing Suffolk’s ever growing small businesses producing non-food and drink items. This new feature includes everything from a milliner, printer and publisher with book-signings.
The Newmarket Experience
Discover the history of horse racing in Suffolk. Explore all there is to know about racing in the National Horseracing Museum’s mobile pop-up interactive ‘Travelling Paddock.’ Ride the race horse simulator and discover how it feels to see life from the perspective of a top jockey. Handle racing silks and learn about Newmarket’s famous heritage.
Greene King Eat Street
Now in it’s third year and gaining popularity from the public and new vendors. Greene King Eat Street is street food at its best and this year has its own garden area fronting the Trinity Ring. The catering avenue lined is with stalls producing and selling freshly prepared meals and delicious snacks. It’s every mum’s dream as every member of the family can chose whatever they want to eat. Then all sit together and enjoy, or salivate over the others’ choices, while listening to music played by the Caribbean Steel Band.
This year’s vast selection includes stone baked pizzas, chili, paella, a salad bar, fresh asparagus, sausage, filled baguettes, deli foods and curries.
